InstantBlue mana

One mana, instant, return one creature to its owner's hand: no conditions, no upside, no riders. That austerity is the design statement. Bounce is blue's structural answer to creatures, a color-pie compromise that swaps the permanence of removal for the tempo of a redo, and this card sets the rate at which that trade is fair. Every successor has had to justify its deviation: Vapor Snag adds a life-loss rider, Snap untaps lands, Into the Roil cycles for more mana, Boomerang widens the target and pays a color for it. Each is a riff on the line this card drew. What keeps it evergreen as a design reference is the timing window it owns. Cast on the opponent's turn for a single blue, it answers a combat trick by removing the target, saves a creature from spot removal by returning it to hand before the spell resolves, replays a creature to re-fire whatever it does on arrival, and resets a token to nothing, all from one mana and a single line of restriction-free text. It functions as punctuation more than removal: a way for blue to say "not yet" to whatever the opponent is trying to do, priced so cheaply that holding up the mana is rarely a real cost. Decades of bounce design have not found a reason to print it cheaper.
