The pitch alternative is the whole identity: a sorcery whose printed mana cost almost never gets paid, because exiling a black card from hand instead turns it into early disruption you can fire before your draw step's tempo cost catches up. It belongs to the cycle of free spells that ask you to exile a card matching their color, with Misdirection and Foil as its closest kin in spirit, and of that group it is the one combo and disruption decks leaned on hardest. The reason is the look-and-choose clause: unlike a random discard, you reveal the hand and take the specific answer or threat that matters, leaving the chaff behind. That precision is exactly why the cost has to bite. Paying the alternate cost spends two cards, the spell plus the black card pitched, to strip one card from the opponent. That is a deliberate 2-for-1 against yourself, traded for speed and surgical targeting: you are buying the right to remove the most dangerous card in their hand a turn or two before you could afford to do it honestly. The nonland restriction sharpens the point further, forbidding you from picking off a land from a stumbling opponent and keeping the spell aimed at cards that win or stop games. And as a sorcery it slots into the proactive plan rather than the reactive one: you clear the path during your own turn, then commit to it, instead of holding the answer up for later.
