Black has never had trouble killing creatures unconditionally; the recurring design question is what to charge for the privilege and whether to bolt anything on top. The destroy clause here asks no questions (no toughness ceiling, no nonblack hedge, no regeneration wrinkle worth dodging), which sits it firmly in the tradition of removal that simply works on whatever is in front of it. The price is steep for that, and the spell-mastery rider is the justification: meet the two-instant-or-sorcery threshold and the kill arrives with two life attached. The structural point is that the base card never gets worse for missing the count. Whiff and you still have clean, if pricey, removal; hit it and the same spell pays a small life dividend on the way out. Two life rarely decides anything by itself, but a grindy spell-heavy deck has usually stocked its graveyard past the bar by the time a creature worth killing shows up, so the rider is close to free upside rather than a build-around. That is the tension the spell-mastery mechanic exists to resolve: unconditional instant-speed removal gets pushed to an inflated rate, and the threshold clause makes that cost feel earned specifically in the decks equipped to clear it. Strip the bonus and this is a serviceable but overtaxed kill spell. The rider is what turns it from something the spell-heavy deck tolerates into something it actively wants.
