Underground Sea
A land that taps for two colors with no life payment, no entry delay, no basic-land prerequisite, no conditional of any kind: the rate is the absence of a rate, and that is the template every two-color fixer has been measured against for thirty years. The design move is brutally simple: print basic land types on a nonbasic land, so every rule that cares about land types treats the card as both an Island and a Swamp at once. Fetchlands that look for "an Island or a Swamp" find it; islandwalk and swampwalk both connect through it. (Effects that key on the absence of the basic supertype, like Back to Basics, treat it as just another nonbasic; Blood Moon strips its types entirely and makes it a Mountain. The dual-type identity matters only where land types matter.)
What makes the original cycle load-bearing is not the fixing but the ceiling it set for everything after. Every subsequent dual-land design (the shocklands' two-life-or-tapped tax, the checklands' basic-land prerequisite, the surveil lands' enter-tapped cost, the slow lands, the pain lands, the filter lands) is a negotiation with this card. Wizards has spent the whole history of the game printing fixing that is almost as good, gated by friction the original does not carry. Reserved List status capped the supply, turning a design artifact into a market one, but the design lesson stands on its own: untaxed two-color fixing is the most powerful effect in the manabase, and every era since has repriced the same effect with a downside bolted on.
