Umbral Expanse

Land — Plains Swamp

The tapland-with-cycling pattern is one of the quieter deckbuilding conveniences to survive across eras: a dual land that fixes two colors while entering tapped, but carries an escape hatch for the moments when a fifth land is the last thing you want to draw. The trade is legible in every copy. Untapped speed is the price you pay for the fixing, so this land is a turn behind when it lands early; that same slowness stops mattering in the mid-game, precisely when the cycling clause turns a dead draw into a fresh card. What makes the two halves cohere is that they never compete: you either want the mana or you want the card, rarely both in the same turn, and the land quietly serves whichever one the game asks for. The white-black identity places it in a color pair long defined by attrition and card advantage, where trading a surplus land for a live draw is exactly the kind of small edge those decks are built to accumulate. There is no ambition here beyond doing an ordinary job well: smoothing a two-color manabase and refusing to be a late-game liability.
