Twist Reality
Modal counters that offer development instead of interaction are rare, because the two jobs pull a deck in opposite directions. This one leans into that tension: the first mode is a clean hard counter, the second walks away from countering entirely to manifest dread, trading a piece of interaction for a body and a filtered library. Nothing carries over between the halves. Because you pick the mode as you cast it, not on resolution, the choice is a read on the game state at the moment you commit the mana: is there a spell worth answering, or is the better line to build your board? A straight counterspell at this cost is a liability against decks that never present a target worth answering; here the fallback is a face-down 2/2 and a card filtered to the graveyard rather than a dead card in hand. That second mode also nudges the shell toward creatures worth flipping face up, quietly pulling away from the spell-dense control build a pure counter would want and toward a creature-leaning one. The price of solving the old counterspell problem (drawing interaction when there is nothing to interact with) is that it is never the sharpest tool at either task: a slower counter than the dedicated ones, a smaller developer than the dedicated ones, valuable precisely because it refuses to be a blank when the game turns wrong for one plan.
