Turn Aside

InstantBlue mana

Most counterspells protect the stack; this one protects the board. The narrow clause is the entire trick: it answers only spells aimed at a permanent you control, which means it does nothing against the open-ended threats most blue interaction is priced to handle. What it buys for a single mana is a parry against targeted removal, a single-target bounce, an aura steal, or any spell that has already locked onto one of your creatures or artifacts. That makes it a protection piece more than a control tool, a card that lives in decks with a permanent worth defending rather than decks trying to win the spell-versus-spell exchange. The design lineage here runs through cards built to deflect a single point of pressure rather than govern the whole stack: it asks not "what is my opponent casting" but "what are they casting at my stuff." Read that way, the constraint is the whole proposition. A one-mana hard counter would be a format-warping problem; bolt the trigger condition to your own board and the cost falls to nothing because the window is so small. The reward is that when the window opens, it slams shut hard: their removal spell is gone, not redirected, not fizzled, and your key permanent never leaves play.
