Classical protection is fixed in the abstract: a printed color or card type, chosen by the designer before anyone knows who is across the table. This Merfolk relocates the decision to the moment it resolves and points it at a specific player rather than a category. Name someone on entry and it gains protection from everything they control: their colored spells, their creatures, their equipment, all of it slides off. Against the named player this is a 3/1 that cannot be blocked, burned, or targeted by anything under their control. The scope is precise, not total: an object owned by the chosen player but controlled by someone else can still touch it, and an object controlled by the chosen player but owned by another is what protection actually restricts. The choose-a-player clause is the real limiter, and its weight scales with the number of opponents. At a crowded table, committing the protection to one player is a genuine cost: everyone you did not name answers the body normally, so the wall covers only a fraction of the removal in the game. Collapse the table to a single opponent and that cost nearly evaporates, since one of the two legal choices happens to control every threat that matters. The body attacks each turn, presents a clock, and forces a board wipe or an edict from the one player it is walled off from. That split, meaningful among many opponents and almost nothing heads-up, is why protection-from-a-chosen-player has stayed rare at this rate.
