Triassic Egg
Ten mana across two activations to put one creature onto the battlefield: by any modern accounting, the math is indefensible. But the math is not the interesting part. The Egg treats accumulated counters as a fuse, asking the player to spend mana over multiple turns toward a delayed payoff that skips the cast step entirely. That shape (pay over time, sacrifice for a board-altering result, choose your mode) is the bones of a whole family of cards that came later. The reanimation half is the other tell. Legends was still sorting out which colors owned which effects, and a colorless artifact that offers hand-to-battlefield cheating or graveyard-to-battlefield reanimation as a modal choice would never survive a contemporary design pass; those jobs got split off and assigned to color and ceremony. Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, and the reanimator package each kept one half of the Egg's brief and discarded the slow charge-up entirely, because the slow charge-up was always the problem. Read now, it looks like a prototype handed every tool in the box and then priced as though it might actually break something. It never did. The fuse was too long and the floor too high for any of it to matter at the table. But the template it was groping toward is real, and most of the cards that finished the thought owe it a quiet debt.
