Treetop Village
The manland template starts here, or at least the version of it that mattered. The early creature-lands solved a problem that had dogged every color for years: how do you give a deck a threat that can't be answered by creature removal, without slotting in a dead card for the matchups where you never need it? The answer was to fold the threat into the manabase. When the board is empty, it produces mana like any other source; when an opponent has spent their Wrath effects and creature spells, it animates as a 3/3 with trample and starts attacking. Because it only becomes a creature until end of turn, it slips back to being a land in time to survive the sorcery-speed sweepers that punish ordinary threats: that resilience is the whole pitch. The activation isn't free, though, and entering tapped pays the tempo cost up front rather than smuggling it past you. The trample matters more than the body suggests, since a 3/3 that has to be blocked by a token or a chump is still pushing damage through. Every creature-land since has worked from this skeleton: a colored land that becomes a creature for a price, with the built-in tax that the mana spent to animate is mana you cannot spend elsewhere, and the open window of an opponent's instant-speed removal. The cycle gave each color its own version; green's asked the least and delivered a clean, recurring threat hiding in plain sight.
