Traumatize

Sorcery3 generic manaBlue manaBlue mana

Halving a library in one shot is a number that has always looked more lethal than it plays. Five mana to erase the top thirty cards of a fresh sixty reads like a finisher, but the math is deceptive: against a depleted library it strips fifteen, and the percentage it removes never changes. The card scales inversely to how badly you need it. That is the central problem mill always faces, and this spell makes it vivid: a single big tick that does the most work exactly when the opponent has the most cards left to spare, and progressively less as you close in on the empty deck that actually wins the game. The honest read is a setup spell, not a kill spell. The right home is the opening move of a two-part plan, paired with something that punishes a thin library or a stocked graveyard rather than the act of decking out itself; on its own it leaves you a copy short of the finish, and a second cast mills only half of the remaining half. As a piece of mill history it embodies the archetype's recurring temptation: the splashiest possible number on a mechanic whose whole difficulty is that big single hits are the least efficient way to empty a library. Decades of mill design have circled back to incremental, repeatable effects for exactly the reason this card demonstrates so plainly.
