Transmutation

Instant1 generic manaBlack mana

A pure design curio: the card exists to weaponize the gap between a creature's two combat numbers, which means it does nothing at all to a 3/3 and everything to a 1/7. The card lives or dies on lopsided stat lines. A defensive wall becomes a 3/1 that any small attacker can punch through; a creature attacking as a 1/4 trades up to a 4/1 and trades down to anything that can survive a swing. The wider the spread between power and toughness, the more there is to steal, and a creature whose numbers already match gains nothing from the flip. Other effects punish asymmetric bodies, but this one does the job at instant speed for two mana, which is why it surfaces in old combat-trick discussions more often than its power level warrants. It is also one of the cleanest examples of a Legends-era design philosophy that has largely disappeared: a spell whose value is entirely contingent on what your opponent has chosen to play, with no fallback mode, no incidental utility, no graveyard hedge. You either catch a wide-bodied wall or a low-toughness fattie in the right combat step and laugh, or the card rots in hand against a board of balanced creatures. Modern design would either give it a floor or cut it; in 1994, the puzzle was the point.
