Landwalk has spent most of its life as a gamble on the opponent's manabase. Islandwalk, swampwalk, forestwalk: each bets that the player across the table is running the right basic, and against a deck that isn't, the keyword is dead text on a tribal common. This Equipment inverts the bet. Instead of keying off a single basic type, it grants evasion against the one category of land nearly every deck is built around. Fetchlands, shocklands, manlands, utility lands, duals of every stripe: a well-built deck is loaded with nonbasics, which means the boots tend to make their wearer unblockable against precisely the decks equipped to interact most. The two-mana cast and two-mana equip keep the rate disciplined, and the evasion scales with the opponent's investment in their mana rather than against it. The more sophisticated the manabase, the better the read. It is a piece of design that took a notoriously conditional keyword and aimed it at the most reliable target on the board, converting a coin flip into something closer to a structural inevitability.
