Trade Caravan

Creature — Human NomadWhite mana

A study in how a slow clock can pretend to be a payoff. The currency counter accrues one per upkeep, and the only thing it buys is untapping a single basic land during an opponent's upkeep: a delayed, conditional ritual that takes two full turns of waiting before it produces a single point of off-turn mana. The design intent reads as a defensive mana trick, a one-drop that quietly bankrolls an instant-speed surprise (a counterspell held up while still tapping out, a combat trick on the opposing turn), but the rate is brutal. You invest two upkeeps of counters to free one land for one window you do not control the timing of. The structural friction is the activation clause itself, which restricts the untap to an opponent's upkeep and so locks the payoff to the narrowest, earliest slice of their turn. Homelands is remembered as the set where the design discipline outran the power level, and this is a representative artifact: a mechanically coherent idea (banked resources spent at instant speed for tempo) attached to numbers that never let the engine pay for the body it sits on. The currency-counter conceit went nowhere afterward, which tells you the experiment was read as a dead end rather than a seed.
