Towering Thunderfist
The activated ability is a guild signpost in miniature: a red creature that pays white mana to gain vigilance, the kind of color-pair gloss that turns a plain body into a faction statement. Mechanically the work is trivial (vigilance lets the Giant attack without tapping, so it stays back as a 4/4 blocker), but the cost is where the design lives. Vigilance is a white keyword, and asking for white mana to switch it on tethers the card to a two-color shell even though the creature itself is mono-red. The body costs you red; the relevant ability costs you the other half of the guild, gating the upside behind a manabase that can produce both colors. Strip away access to white and the ability is dead text, leaving a five-mana 4/4 with no evasion and nothing else going on. As a role-player, it gives a color pair a body it can hold while building toward something better, useful only to a deck already paying for both halves of the pair and inert to anyone who can't.
