Tortured Existence

EnchantmentBlack mana

The discard cost is also the value: that is the whole design, and it is what separates this from every "return a creature from your graveyard" effect that asks you to pay cards instead of just mana. Each activation feeds a creature card from your hand into the bin and pulls a creature card back out, so the engine never spends from your library. It loops the same handful of bodies forever, as long as you keep finding the black mana. That shape rewards creatures whose deaths and recursions matter on their own, which is why it has always read as a black aristocrats and grind-value tool rather than a tempo play: the discard half fuels graveyard payoffs while the return half rebuilds the board. The lack of any timing restriction is quietly part of what makes it dangerous. You can rebuild at the end of an opponent's turn, set up a sacrifice payoff in response to a removal spell by feeding a fresh body into the graveyard, or churn the yard on the stack mid-combat. As an expression of the "graveyard as second hand" idea, it predates the explicit recursion engines that came later, and it still reads as a clean statement of that design: cheap, repeatable, color-bound to black, and entirely dependent on what you choose to discard and bring back. The card does nothing on its own; that is the point. It is scaffolding for a deck that has already decided its creatures are worth dying twice.
