Torrent of Lava
Red's X-damage board sweep that spares fliers is a familiar template, from Earthquake through Fault Line to Magmaquake, but this one wires a damage-prevention subgame directly into its own resolution. While the spell sits on the stack, every creature on the battlefield (yours and your opponent's) gains a tap ability that shaves a single point off the damage that creature is about to take, and only that creature: the prevention is strictly self-targeted, so a board cannot pool its taps to protect a key threat. Each activation saves that creature one point, and only by tapping, which means a creature that ducks the sweep is a creature that cannot block or attack on the turn it survives. The prevention is paid in tempo, untapped body by untapped body. This is a deeply 1990s artifact, from an era when damage prevention lived on the cards rather than in the comprehensive rules, and before "deals X damage to each creature" settled into the clean, no-strings template it later became. The tap-to-prevent clause is the structural valve: it keeps a symmetrical red sweep honest by handing the prevention to every creature and pricing it in untapped bodies. The card plays less like a modern wrath and more like an arithmetic puzzle, where the real question is how high you have to push X so that the single point each creature can shave off no longer matters.
