Flashback was the marquee mechanic of its era: a graveyard that doubled as a second hand, and the format leaned on it hard enough to print dedicated hate aimed at one keyword and nothing else. This is the cleanest version of that hate. It does nothing against a graveyard full of ordinary creatures or instants; it exists only to gut the recursion engine flashback builds, exiling every card carrying the keyword from a single graveyard. That hyper-specificity dictates the price: a card answering exactly one mechanic can be costed this aggressively because most opponents hand you a dead draw. The targeting clause ("target player") technically permits aiming it at yourself, though no one ever wanted to. It sits in a small lineage of self-aware countermeasures shipped inside the same environment that introduced the mechanic they hose, the kind of design that tells you the makers expected flashback to dominate their own format and wanted a release valve in the same packs. Strip away an environment thick with flashback cards and it reads as a blank, the inevitable fate of a one-keyword answer once later sets mostly stopped printing the keyword.
