Tolaria West

Land

The transmute clause is the entire reason to run a land that enters tapped and produces only blue: pay three mana and discard it from your hand to fetch any card in your deck whose mana value is exactly zero. That net is wider than it sounds, because zero-cost cards run well past the obvious lands. The moxen live there, Engineered Explosives set to nothing, Lotus Petal, and the cards that print no mana cost at all and so inherently carry a mana value of zero: Living End, Summoner's Pact and its pact siblings, Restore Balance. A land that doubles as a build-around tutor is genuinely rare design, and the rate is paid twice: it comes in tapped, and the transmute is sorcery-speed, so it can neither ambush anything nor be cracked in response. You commit early to either the mana or the search, never both off one copy. What gives the effect its longevity is the search criterion itself. You are not tutoring by name or by type but by a number, which means the pool grows retroactively: every new zero-cost card printed anywhere becomes a legal target without the card changing a word. As the lone land in the game built around transmute, it has no functional twin to be measured against, which is precisely why it persists in any deck whose engine opens with a free spell.
