Tip the Scales
Most sweepers scale to what your opponents field; this one scales to what you are willing to give up. The -X/-X is pegged to the toughness of the creature you sacrifice, which inverts the usual math of a black wrath: instead of paying a flat rate to shrink the board a fixed amount, you set the size of the wave yourself by choosing your fuel. Feed it a fat blocker and you wipe the table wider; feed it a token and you clip only the smallest bodies. That sacrifice clause does two jobs at once. It is what powers the sweep, obviously, but it is also the engine an aristocrats build wants: the fuel goes to the graveyard on its own terms, so death triggers and recursion turn the mandatory loss into the point of the card rather than a tax on it. Because -X/-X shrinks toughness directly, it slips past the protections a big threat might lean on; indestructibility does nothing when a creature's toughness is dropped to zero. The only bodies that walk away are the ones whose toughness outlasts the number you set, which means the effect asymmetrically punishes go-wide boards while a deck with genuinely enormous threats can weather the wave. The tension is the whole design: the bigger the sweep you want, the more valuable the creature you have to throw into it, and the card refuses to hand you a cheap, one-sided answer without asking you to build toward one.
