Thriving Bluff
The dual-land template that trades speed for zero deckbuilding commitment. The choose-a-color clause makes this the red member of a five-card cycle, one per color, that fixes exactly two colors while locking in only one at build time: red is always the guaranteed second tap, but the partner color is a choice made as the land enters the battlefield, not a slot you dedicate during construction. That flexibility is paid for entirely by the tapped clause, which is the whole cost structure of the design. Entering tapped is a full tempo tax on turn one, so these lands are built for decks that can absorb a slow start in exchange for never drawing dead: the color you name is guaranteed, and the land is live in any hand where one of its two colors matters. Plain taplands came first, but the naming mechanic is the genuine refinement, letting a single printing serve any red-plus-one pairing rather than spending a card on each combination. It is fixing engineered for the widest possible audience, which is exactly why it reads as unglamorous: no drawback beyond the tap, no upside beyond the mana, just a clean rate for players who would rather not stumble on colors than shave a turn.
