Thran Dynamo

Artifact4 generic mana

Three colorless mana from a four-mana artifact is a profile that has barely shifted in twenty-five years of design, and that durability is the whole point. The math is what fixed it in place: it costs four and taps for three, so it runs you a mana behind the turn it lands, then hands back three colorless every turn after, accelerating you faster than the cheaper two-cost rocks that produce one. Colorless output is the trade. Unlike the dual-producing rocks that came later, it cannot help cast a multicolored bomb on its own; it wants to feed something hungry and indifferent to color, the kind of expensive payoff that does not care what kind of mana arrives. That narrow output is exactly why it never got reined in the way faster, color-flexible accelerants have: it ramps hard but only toward a specific plan, the big-artifact and colorless-finisher decks that have always defined where it belongs. It occupies the rate between the cheap one-producers and the expensive engines that make more conditionally, the point where a single tap meaningfully changes what next turn can do. The design has aged into a benchmark: when a new ramp artifact gets evaluated, the question is often whether it does more or less than three colorless for four, and most of the answers cluster around what this established.
