Fungus design built around a clock you cannot rush: a spore counter arrives each upkeep, and three of them buy one ping to anything. That is the whole engine, and it is deliberately slow. The card rewards patience the way a slow-burning fuse does, asking you to sit on a 2/2 body while counters accrue, then cash three of them for damage every third turn at best. The spore-counter mechanic was the backbone of the Fungus tribe in its debut, the resource that linked the Thallids to their Saproling-spawning cousins; here the counters feed a repeatable damage outlet instead of token generation, which gives the line a different shape from its sibling Fungi. The structural tension is obvious once you see it: a 2/2 for three mana that only converts to relevant output over many turns is asking for an investment most boards do not survive. What makes the design honest is that the body is genuine while the ability is a long-game luxury, not a removal spell you can lean on. As an artifact of an era when "value over time" meant counting upkeeps rather than drawing cards, it documents how early Magic tried to price recurring damage: by metering it so tightly that the rate almost never mattered.
