Thelonite Monk

Creature — Insect Monk Cleric2 generic manaGreen manaGreen mana

A land-conversion engine built backward from the usual color-fixing logic: instead of turning your own duals into the colors you need, it permanently rewrites someone else's land into a Forest, sacrificing a green creature each time it fires. The "lasts indefinitely" clause is the whole design point, predating the cleaner template Wizards would later land on for permanent type changes. Every activation is a one-shot trade of a green body for a converted land, so the Monk wants a steady supply of expendable creatures feeding it rather than a single big payoff. The strategic axis it opens is mana-screw, not mana-fixing: aimed at an opponent's nonbasic, it can shut off the colors that land was producing, and aimed across a board it slowly turns a battlefield monochrome. That kind of color-denial design was a recurring Fallen Empires experiment, the set where Wizards leaned hard into attrition, token swarms, and abilities that grind both players down a resource at a time. The 1/2 body and double-green cost mean the Monk itself is fragile and slow to deploy, so it functions less as a creature than as a repeatable tap-and-sacrifice outlet that happens to walk into combat range. It represents a particular era's idea of what green could do to an opponent's lands before that space was quietly handed elsewhere.
