The One Ring

The protection clause is the part that rewired competitive play: cast the artifact and you become untouchable, immune to targeting and damage from every source until your next turn. That single window transforms a colorless four-drop into a full turn of insulation for a combo player pushing a lethal line or a control pilot trying to stabilize, which is why it slotted into decks across every color identity that could produce four mana. The card-draw engine is the reason it stays. Each activation ratchets the burden counters upward, and every point of card advantage is bought with an escalating upkeep life payment: one counter draws one, but by the fourth or fifth tap you are drawing a hand and bleeding several life a turn against a clock you set yourself. The tension is entirely self-inflicted, a deckbuilder's dilemma about how greedy to get before the accumulating burden outpaces the game. Colorless card advantage of this quality has almost never existed at this rate, and pairing it with indestructibility and a protection shield in the same object is why it was restricted in Vintage not long after release, a rare fate for a card that also sees heavy play in decks with no such constraint. The design reads as a deliberate translation of the source material into rules: the Ring gives you power you cannot easily refuse, and the cost is measured in what it slowly takes from you.
