The Endstone

The engine and the clock live in the same sentence, and the interplay between them is the whole design. Card advantage this unconditional (a fresh card off every land drop and every spell, with no cap, no tap, no cost beyond having played the game) reads like an unbeatable draw engine, and it would be, except that at the beginning of your end step it overwrites your life total with a fixed number: half your starting total, rounded up. Read carelessly that looks like a countdown, but the trigger cuts both ways. It sets your life to that number rather than subtracting toward it, so if you spend below the threshold during your turn (paying life to Phyrexian mana, fetching, feeding a life-cost engine), the end step floors you right back up. Life stops being a shrinking resource and becomes a renewable one, snapped to the same value turn after turn. What the clause actually does is fence you into a permanent midpoint: you cannot hold above half your starting total past your end step, and you cannot fall below it for long either. Seven mana buys a machine that fills your hand without limit and locks your life to a single figure, trading the ability to bank a comfortable buffer for a life total you can burn and reset at will. The lineage is the long line of no-strings card-draw artifacts Wizards has always priced high or fenced with a drawback; this one pays not with a rate on the draw but by taking your life total off the table as a variable.
