Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts

Of all the iterations the Orzhov matron has received over the years, this is the one built purely as a fortress. Protection from creatures means no creature can block her, and combined with the triggered ability she runs two separate defensive systems at once. The protection keeps her alive through the air or ground; the punisher clause is independent of her entirely, a player-level No Mercy that fires whenever any creature lands combat damage on you, not on her. An opponent who chooses to attack your life total destroys the attacker and hands you a flying Spirit for the trade, which turns every alpha strike into a losing proposition: race her, and your board melts a creature at a time while you fall behind on tokens. The seven-mana price pays for a permanent that resists creature-based removal and rewrites combat math on both sides of the table. Vigilance closes the loop, letting the same 4/4 pressure a life total and stand guard over yours without choosing between the two. This is a deliberately top-heavy deterrent rather than the cheap, repeatable disruption of earlier Teysa designs: a single anchor that punishes the swing rather than enabling one of your own. She is less a value engine than a tax on aggression, a creature the opponent has to plan around rather than punch through.
