Teyo, the Shieldmage
Most planeswalkers protect themselves by making blockers or clearing threats. This one protects the person holding it: the passive grants the controller hexproof, pulling the pilot out of range of Thoughtseize, targeted edicts, and any spell or ability an opponent could aim at your face. That reframes what the loyalty is for. The only activated line, a −2 for a 0/3 Wall with defender, is not a value engine but a spend-down: with no way to climb back up, the card lands at five and only ever ticks toward zero, trading two counters at a time for a body meant to gum up the ground and keep the walker on the table. So the two halves sit in an odd relationship. The hexproof is the payload, live the instant it resolves and needing no setup; the Walls just buy time, and every activation walks the permanent closer to falling off. That tension is the design. The best play is often to do nothing: hold at five and simply exist, letting the passive blank targeted disruption while the opponent has to solve a planeswalker they cannot touch with removal aimed at you. A three-mana permanent whose strongest mode is inactivity is a strange object, and it marks a narrow but genuine niche: the walker you cast to shut off a single line of attack, not to grind a game.
