Terror
Two mana to destroy almost anything, with two holes cut into the targeting: not artifact creatures, not black ones. That carve-out was load-bearing. It enforced color-pie discipline (black handles its own problems through edicts and discard, not unconditional destruction), and it gave artifact creatures a structural reason to exist as evasion against the format's most efficient removal. Wizards spent the next two decades iterating on the template, each time trading one restriction for another because unconditional cheap black destruction was understood to be too strong without a hole somewhere in the targeting. Doom Blade flipped the carve-out to nonblack-only, Go for the Throat swapped to nonartifact-only, Ultimate Price narrowed it to single-colored, Cast Down excluded legends, and Dark Banishing dropped the nonartifact clause entirely by adding a third point of mana to the cost. The regeneration clause, now largely vestigial, completed the original calibration: in a format where Sedge Troll and Drudge Skeletons were real threats, it closed the loop on creatures that would otherwise survive the kill. Its descendants have outclassed it nearly everywhere it might be legal, yet the design team still works inside the frame it set: cheap, near-unconditional black removal with exactly one targeting hole, and the cost of that hole calibrated against how much it gives up.
