Temple of Epiphany
The trade-off is right there in the timing: enter tapped, lose the tempo of an untapped land, and in exchange smooth your next draw before the turn even develops. This is the dual-land template that answered a long-running design problem, namely how to print fixing that an aggressive deck would think twice about while a slower deck happily plays four. The tapped clause is the cost; the scry is what makes the cost feel like a benefit rather than a tax, turning a dead tempo turn into card selection that filters away a flood or a screw. The scry resolves on entry, so the information arrives exactly when you most want to shape the next draw step, and it stacks across multiple copies in a way that quietly improves consistency over a game. Compared to the painlands that came before, which charged life for color, this line of lands charges a turn of speed instead, a price paid once on the way in rather than every time you tap. That structural choice is why these became the default fixing for two-color midrange and control shells: the kind of deck that can afford to fall a beat behind early and wants the early-game smoothing more than it wants the untapped land. The Izzet pairing here serves the spell-velocity colors specifically, the decks most rewarded by seeing one extra card deep before committing to a line.
