Temple Acolyte

Creature — Human Cleric1 generic manaWhite mana

A body comes down, life goes up, and nothing else has to be parsed: that bare readability was the entire spec for the Portal starter products, where templates were stripped to their plainest possible form to teach the game rather than test it. The 1/3 frame is tuned for that environment, sturdy enough to block the early ground stalls those decks tended to settle into, while the three life arrives as a stabilizing cushion against the aggressive curves a new player would actually be facing across the table. Lifegain stapled to a creature's arrival is one of the oldest comfort mechanics in the game, and this is about as bare as the pattern gets: no scaling, no conditions, no payoff for chaining it. What earns the card its small place in the record is the language it helped normalize. The Portal sets pioneered the readable trigger phrasing Wizards later adopted across the board; "When this creature enters" is the descendant of templates these products helped standardize. The card asks nothing of the player beyond casting it on curve, which was exactly the point. There is no hidden axis to exploit and no constraint doing load-bearing balance work, because balance here meant teaching rather than competing.
