Tel-Jilad Defiance

Instant1 generic manaGreen mana

Protection spells that replace themselves are rare for a reason: most want to either fizzle a removal spell or push damage through, and a free card is a lot to staple to either job. This one pays for the cantrip by narrowing the protection to a single card type. On a plane where the removal, the blockers, and half the threats were artifacts, protection from artifacts functioned as a targeted bypass: it dodged the format's premier removal, slipped a creature past the format's premier blockers, and connected for combat damage uncontested. The draw clause is what keeps the card live even when the protection does nothing, because cantripping instants carry their own floor: at worst you spend two mana to buff a creature and replace this card at instant speed while holding up the option. Context governs everything else. Strip away the artifact-heavy environment and the protection rarely matters, and the card flattens into a slightly overcosted draw spell. Drop it into a metal-soaked metagame and it reads like a counterspell for any artifact removal aimed at your best creature, with a card attached. That swing between near-blank and near-essential, dialed entirely by how many artifacts sit on the battlefield, is what pinning a cantrip to so specific a protection was built to produce.
