How this card plays

7 reviews

The artifact-sacrifice payoff that wants to be the deck's whole back half: a draw outlet that grows into a finisher. The two-mana 3/3 reads like a wall, but the lockout clause is sharper than that. It can't block until its power reaches six, so the body that looks defensive is, early on, just a frame for the engine. Each tap-and-sacrifice draws a card and adds a counter. Three activations and it crosses the gate, at which point reach and trample matter: reach lets the now-6/6 hold off fliers on the back swing, and trample pushes the excess past a blocker through to the defending player. It is not evasion on the attack; it is a body that finally gets to fight and spills damage over whatever stands in front of it.

The home is artifact-token and aristocrats shells with cheap fodder. Wilson, Refined Grizzly works as a treasure-and-thopter commander where tokens cover the body's hunger; Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer turns a wide token board into both sacrifice material and a six-power threshold that arrives in a single combat step. The discipline is artifact density: without a dozen-plus expendable artifacts, the engine stalls and you have an inert 3/3.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card, sub-$5 on release. The clock is too slow for Bracket 4-5, where the artifact-engine slots go to Krark-Clan Ironworks loops and faster mana, and it asks too much density for precon shelves. Inside its lane it competes for the recursive-draw slot against Skullclamp, which draws two per creature death with no power gate and no need to survive. Technodrome wins when the deck wants the body and the eventual finisher folded into one card; Skullclamp wins on raw efficiency.

In multiplayer the gate is a mercy to its controller's threat profile. Three activations before it can swing means the table sees the clock coming, so it draws less heat than a closed loop. Invisible outside artifact-density decks, which is most of the table.
