Taurean Mauler

Creature — Shapeshifter2 generic manaRed mana

The growth clause keys off the one event a creature normally can't tax: an opponent simply doing things. Every spell they cast feeds it a counter, which makes it a passive snowball in a slot where red usually pays full freight for stats. The clever part is that it scales with the table rather than your own development, so it gets bigger fastest against exactly the decks (control, ramp, anyone spending heavily on the stack) that would otherwise outlast a 2/2. Changeling is the other half of the design, and it isn't decoration: a Shapeshifter that counts as Elf and Goblin and Dragon and Wizard simultaneously turns a generic red beater into a universal tribal body. That makes it a glue piece for any creature-type-matters build, where the counter engine is almost incidental to the fact that it slots into whatever lord or payoff the deck is running. The tension the card resolves is between two unrelated reward structures (a counter payoff that wants a busy opponent, a typeline payoff that wants a tribal shell) stapled onto a body cheap enough that you rarely regret playing it for either reason alone. It asks nothing of you on cast and quietly accrues value from the game happening around it.
