Incubate is compleation staged as a two-step ritual: the payload arrives as a token dense with counters, but it stays a lump of artifact until you spend the flip cost, so the value is real yet deferred. Here the front-loaded half is unusually generous. Five life and an Incubator carrying five +1/+1 counters is a fat bundle of raw material stapled to a five-mana enchantment, with the life gain buying the time to unpack that threat on a schedule you set rather than one your opponent forces. The second line is what turns this from a value card into a build-around. Granting reach to every Phyrexian you control converts a floor of ground-bound artifact bodies into an anti-flyer wall, and it does the tribal-anthem work green historically farmed out to Spider tribal, folding the answer to evasion into a mechanic-defined creature type instead of a hand-picked cast of Spiders. That reroute is the more durable design idea: the reach clause scales with a shell already churning out Phyrexians, not with a splash. The tension is patience against tempo. The counters and the anthem only pay off once the Incubator has flipped and the rest of your Phyrexian board has assembled, so you spend early on defense and life while banking a creature that lands on your timing.
