Spellcasting decks had wanted a payoff like this for years: a body that converts your instants and sorceries into a board, so the cantrips and counterspells you were already casting start building toward a win on their own. The trick is the cast trigger. It fires when you cast the spell, not when it resolves, so even a Negate that gets nothing or a Brainstorm that just shuffles your hand still leaves a 2/2 flier behind. That timing turns reactive play into proactive pressure, which is the tension this design resolves: in a tap-out world, leaving up countermagic feels passive, but here every held-up answer that you actually fire doubles as a threat. The 2/2 body invites every removal spell in the game, and a single Drake per spell is a slow clock if you stumble, which is the cost of building a creature whose whole output is contingent on a second card. The reward scales fast, though: storm-count turns, free spells, and instant-speed flashes of value all read as more Drakes, and the army arrives in the air where blue's defensive shell can protect it. It's the canonical "cast spells, make tokens" payoff, the one that taught a generation of players that a deck of nothing but interaction and card draw could still close a game without ever drawing a finisher.
