Tale's End

Instant1 generic manaBlue mana

Voidslime cost three mana and a green splash to counter an activated or triggered ability; Stifle did the ability half for one, but touched nothing on the stack you'd call a spell. This collapses that whole class of narrow answers into a single blue instant and then widens it: not just the abilities on the stack, but legendary spells themselves. That last clause names who it was built to fight. In an era where the most oppressive things happening on any given turn were legendary spells resolving, planeswalkers ticking up, and combo pieces firing their enters-the-battlefield and activated abilities, a card that reaches all three of those from one seat is doing genuine structural work. It answers what conventional counterspells cannot: the reanimation trigger, the fetchland activation you'd never let resolve, the tutor's search. What holds it back from being a strict Stifle-plus is the extra mana it asks for: two rather than one. It is a scalpel with a specific list of legal cuts, and the list happens to include most of the things a format's boss cards do to win. As a piece of interaction it is less a counterspell than a permission-denial tool, phrased in the grammar of the stack.
