Creature — Human Pirate Wizard4 generic manaBlue mana

The Portal Second Age design template is visible in every line: a five-mana 1/1 that taps for a single card, with timing language built to keep newcomers from doing anything tricky. Card draw on a stick was a known lever by 1998, but this version is hedged in three directions at once. The body is fragile, the cost is steep, and the ability fires only before attackers are declared, which confines it to your own turn ahead of combat and strips out any defensive or surprise application. That last restriction is the tell of the Portal product line, where instant-speed interaction was deliberately filed off so the rules complexity stayed inside a beginner's grasp. The activation window does a job related to a sorcery-speed clause, only tighter: it keeps the draw in one clean, predictable slot ahead of combat rather than threading it through an opponent's turn or a declared attack, where a player still learning the stack might lose track of priority. Strip away the training wheels and what remains is a slow, repeatable draw engine bolted to a creature that dies to almost anything. The interesting part is the era it documents: a moment when Wizards was actively rebuilding familiar effects into deliberately narrowed shapes for an audience that did not yet know what the stack was.
