Taiga

Land — Mountain Forest

Brutally simple, and that simplicity is the whole argument: a land carrying both basic types that taps for either color and asks nothing in return. No life payment, no conditional entry, no tapped arrival, no friction of any kind, and the absence is the point. Every later generation of dual land has carried strings this original cycle never did: the shocklands trade a life payment for the dual color, the check lands need a partner already in play, the surveil lands arrive tapped, the triomes demand fetching to feel worth the slot. Each is an argument against the rate this Alpha cycle set for free, and each loses. The dual subtype carries the weight in eternal formats: fetchlands like Wooded Foothills and Windswept Heath read this as a Mountain and a Forest both, the interaction that built modern mana. Because the design lives on the Reserved List, no copy has been reprinted since, locking supply at its early-90s ceiling and turning the card into as much a financial artifact as a playable one; the policy forbids a reprint, but that constraint matters precisely because no better version was ever found. There is no better version. These ten original dual lands are the high-water mark for unconditional fixing, and every subsequent cycle is a concession to the power level they established.
