Sylvan Messenger

Creature — Elf3 generic manaGreen mana

Card advantage with a purity tax. Green tribal Elf decks live and die by their hand, emptying it fast and needing a way to reload; this is the reload button, digging four deep, keeping every Elf, and bottoming the rest in any order. The payoff scales with commitment. In a list running nothing but Elves, every reveal is a free card; dilute with non-Elf spells and the variance climbs until the trigger whiffs entirely. That self-policing is the whole bargain, a green analogue to the way creature-type lords reward purity rather than raw board presence. The trample matters less than the trigger, a small concession to the 2/2 body so it does something in combat once the enters-the-battlefield reveal has already paid out. What makes it endure is the refuel, and the template behind it (reveal a fixed number of cards, keep the matching type, bottom the rest) became a recurring shape for tribal card draw in later sets. The four-card window is the calibration that keeps it honest in either direction: deep enough to reliably hit in a dedicated build, shallow enough that it cannot loot a sloppy one.
