Misdirection's louder cousin, paying mana instead of a card to do the same job: hijack a spell's target and point it somewhere else. The single-target restriction turns it into a precision instrument rather than a catch-all. It only touches spells with exactly one target, which leaves out anything that resolves without pointing at all (a Wrath of God hits everything by description, not by aiming) and anything that names two or more targets (Decimate, Arc Trail). What it does catch is the entire world of one-on-one interaction: a removal spell, a burn spell, a single-target draw spell like Stroke of Genius. The classic line is turning an opponent's kill spell back onto their own creature, or onto their own face when the burn carries collateral. The deeper play happens on the stack against combo: a pump spell or any single-target piece of a kill, all of it reroutable for two mana at instant speed. The spell-only wording marks the hard limit, though: it answers spells, never abilities, so a sacrifice trigger or any activated or triggered effect waiting on the stack is untouchable. The card rewards reading what is on the stack rather than what is on the board, which puts it in a small family (alongside Redirect) that asks you to win the priority window rather than the combat step. It is a counterspell that never says "counter," and so it slips past the hedging an opponent does to play around hard answers: they protect against the spell being stopped, not against it landing somewhere they never aimed.
