Three damage to each creature is one of the genre's most precisely calibrated numbers: enough to wipe the small, fast boards that punish a midrange deck's slow start, not enough to threaten what a control deck actually wants to keep. Anger of the Gods and Slagstorm tuned that rate on the modern side, and every unconditional sweeper carried the same structural liability: it rots in hand against the matchups it was never built to answer, going dead when the board is empty or the opponent has gone over the top of your removal. Cycling patches that hole. When the sweep is the wrong card, three mana turns it back into a live draw rather than a blank you are stuck holding. That the cycling cost equals the cast cost at three mana is the deliberate part: the toggle stays a real decision in the moment, not a discount you default into, so the deck pays full freight either way and simply picks the mode the board demands. That parity is what separates a maindeckable sweeper from a sideboard card you have to guess about. Red board-clears that wanted to be more than a hate card against aggro all wrestle with this tension, and cycling has since become the standard way to make a narrow effect pull its weight. What reads as a damage spell with a draw clause is really a hedge stapled to the card: a deck can commit to a sweeper without committing to needing one.
