Surveyor's Scope

Artifact2 generic mana

Catch-up ramp keyed to the table's actual greed: the more players who have pulled ahead on lands, the more basics it fetches, and it does literally nothing when you are the one in front. That inversion is the design wager. Most ramp is unconditional acceleration, which hands the most help to whoever least needs it; this instead measures the specific gap between your land count and everyone else's, and pays out only to the player who has fallen behind. The exile clause keeps the engine one-shot, so it cannot snowball: you get one window, sized to the moment you activate it, and then it is gone. It also puts the lands directly onto the battlefield rather than into hand, so a player trailing several opponents can leapfrog several turns of development in a single tap, which makes the timing decision the interesting part. Activate while the table is even and it whiffs entirely; wait too long and the runaway player has already won. The right window is the brief stretch where two or three opponents have separated from you but the game is not yet decided. It is a politically legible card, too: nobody resents the player in last place catching up, which makes it one of the rare ramp pieces that reads as fair to the very people it is racing against.
