Suntail Hawk

Creature — BirdWhite mana

A flying 1/1 for one white mana is the cleanest possible statement of evasion-as-baseline. It descends from a long line of cheap white fliers (Mesa Falcon asked you to pay an extra mana for the keyword, Storm Crow wore it in blue) and represents the era where the flying came free, no overhead attached. Where Savannah Lions traded the air for a bigger ground body and Mother of Runes loaded a protective ability onto the same one-drop slot, this one keeps the design space empty on purpose. It is not vanilla but French vanilla: the body carries a single evergreen keyword and nothing else, the minimal increment a one-drop can add over a vanilla 1/1. That spareness is the point. A core set needs a control group, a creature whose rate is so unadorned that everything else can be priced against it, and a flying 1/1 for a single white pip has been that yardstick across editions. The card teaches evasion without complicating it, which is the job a common like this is built to do. Nothing about it has aged into relevance, and nothing was ever meant to; it is the reference point others are designed to beat, and almost all of them do.
