Most hatebears attack one specific thing; this one attacks an entire mechanical axis. The first mode strips the counters off a creature and then padlocks it, which functionally answers everything that lives on a +1/+1 stack: graft, modular, evolve, the slow accumulation of an adapt or bolster board. Because it only targets a creature, it leaves planeswalkers alone, so the real teeth are in the second mode, the stranger and meaner one, aimed at a player rather than a permanent. It wipes an opponent's accumulated counters and shuts the spigot off entirely. That single line walls off poison and infect, energy reserves, and experience counters: any counter that lives on the player rather than on their permanents. The catch is that the prohibition is tethered to the body. A 1/4 survives token-grade damage but folds to real removal, and the moment it leaves, the floodgates reopen. That makes it a stax piece masquerading as a creature: a continuous denial effect with a kill switch attached, rather than a one-shot Solemnity that asks nothing in return. The design lives in how broadly "counters" has expanded across the game. Each new counter-based subsystem printed since quietly widens what this Cleric turns off, so a deliberately narrow-looking enters-the-battlefield clause keeps accruing relevance it was never specifically built to have.
