Summoner's Bane

Instant2 generic manaBlue manaBlue mana

The recurring weakness of hard counterspells is the tempo deficit they leave behind: you spend four mana to stop a threat and pass with nothing on board. This one closes that gap by stapling a 2/2 Illusion to the counter, so a single instant both denies their creature and replaces it on your side of the table. The math is the appeal. Countering a three-drop while gaining a body that can block or attack next turn folds a two-card swing into one, and unlike effects that pair denial with a conditional trigger, the token here is unconditional: no death-trigger, no clue, no upkeep tax weighing against it. The narrow target is what pays for that. It answers creature spells and only creature spells, which makes it dead against the burn, removal, and noncreature threats a counterspell ideally wants the flexibility to catch. That restriction is the entire bargain: against a creature-dense opponent it nets you two cards off one, and against anything else it sits in hand waiting for a target that may never arrive. The instinct behind it (building a board while subtracting from theirs) recurs whenever designers want denial to feel less purely reactive than a bare Counterspell. The distance between its ceiling and its floor is about as wide as a counterspell's two outcomes can stretch, and which one you get is decided before the spell is even drawn.
