What looks like a defensive board sweep is actually an attacker's weapon, and the trick is in what the effect leaves behind rather than what it removes. Stripping abilities and setting an opponent's whole board to a base 0/2 reads like a wrath substitute, but the surviving body is the point: a wall of toughness-2 vanilla creatures cannot block profitably, and the abilities they shed include the deathtouch, first strike, lifelink, and regeneration that would otherwise turn an alpha strike into a slaughter of your own team. Cast in response to blocks being declared, it rewrites combat math after the defender has committed, converting a block that would have killed your attacker into a clean one-sided exchange in your favor. Because the affected creatures lose all abilities, they also lose their death and combat triggers, so a sacrifice payoff or a damage-dealt trigger that would have punished the swing simply does not fire. Split second is what seals the trap: as long as this is on the stack, the targeted player cannot flash in a surprise blocker, cannot crack a fetchland for a shock, cannot fire off a pump activation to wriggle free before it resolves. The lone carve-out is mana abilities, which stay live even as the off-ramps that matter stay closed. The cost is the discipline: it answers nothing on its own, reverts at end of turn, and only earns its slot in a deck built to cash one wide-open swing into a kill.
