Strength of Night
The kicker is the entire identity: pay on top and your Zombies swing for an extra +2/+2 across the board. That conditional is the card admitting what it actually is, a tribal payoff dressed up as a generic team pump. The base mode, a flat +1/+1 to your creatures at instant speed, is unremarkable and was never the point; it exists so the spell still does something when you draw it without a board of the undead. The reward lives in green reaching across the color pie into black's signature graveyard tribe, an instinct that ran through a lot of allied-pair experimentation in this era of design: a card whose home color is green but whose actual purpose only unlocks when you commit the black mana for the kicker. The strategic tension is that the splash only pays off when the Zombies are already on the table, which means the card does its real work in the exact game state where a pump spell is most likely to be redundant. As a finisher it wants a swarm of cheap bodies turning sideways and a lethal nudge the opponent cannot see coming during their attempted blocks. Honest tribal support: narrow, mono-green on its face but black-committed in practice, rewarding the player who already decided to live in green-black Zombies rather than enticing anyone to start.
