Stormcaller of Keranos
A 2/2 with haste for is a serviceable red beater, the kind of thing aggressive decks have always wanted arriving ready to attack on turn three. But the scry ability locked behind blue mana tells you what the card actually is: a creature built for a two-color shell that wants its damage now and its draws smoothed later. The activation costs
, so the body and the engine draw from opposite halves of the mana base, and the card only becomes fully itself in an Izzet build that can afford both. That split is the design at work: red supplies the haste and the pressure, blue supplies the long-game filtering, and neither color alone gets to keep the whole card. In the lulls between attacks (a clogged board, a turn where you hold back the beater), it converts surplus blue mana into a steady drip of card selection, a use pattern that rewards a deck planning to grind rather than a deck planning to burst. It asks you to commit to a guild rather than a color, and it pays that commitment off at both ends of the curve: the aggressive front, the attritional back.
