Stoneforge Mystic
The 1/2 body is the misdirection: the rate looks like a value play, but the activated ability is doing something the curve was never costed for. For two mana and a tap, it puts an Equipment from hand straight onto the battlefield, skipping the casting cost of whatever the entry trigger fetched, and it does so at instant speed. That timing is where the card breaks open. Pass with mana up, let an opponent commit to their board, then drop a game-ending piece of gear at their end step so that nothing but the equip cost stands between you and a swing on your own turn. The textbook target is Batterskull, whose Living Weapon clause attaches it to a fresh Germ token the moment it arrives, sidestepping the cast cost entirely and producing a lifelink threat well ahead of schedule; that pairing landed cleanly enough to draw a Constructed ban. What keeps the engine from running away is the gap between the two halves: the search is generous and unconditional, but the cheat demands a full tap, leaving the 1/2 exposed on defense the turn it matters most. It remains one of the cleanest toolbox creatures ever printed: a single body that finds the right Equipment and lands it on a timeline the rest of the format was never built to race.
